What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise system created by Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara. Classical Pilates consists of a progression of movements completed in small repetitions. These smooth movements elongate and strengthen muscles. The “powerhouse,” abdominal/core, is utilized and provides strengthening and stabilization benefits to improve quality of life and function.

The creator of Pilates, Joseph Pilates, originally termed this method of training as “Contrology.” He described “Contrology” as complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Through practice of this flowing style, each individual’s body in time will be freed from compensatory weakness that contribute to chronic injuries. However, this freedom from weakness and injury can only be achieved through mindful control over muscles.

Who teaches Vanguard Pilates Program classes?

The Vanguard Pilates program is taught by Melanie Carminati, PT, DPT. Melanie is a physical therapist with East Northport Physical Therapy. She has her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Drexel University and is Core Mat I certified through Power Pilates. She completed her graduate physical therapy internship at Polestar Physical Therapy & Pilates Center of Miami where she was trained in Pilates for rehabilitation under Brent Anderson and Kathleen Bower. Melanie is also a dancer with experience treating the dance community. Melanie is excited to share her passion for Pilates to help individuals gain strength and confidence in movement and encourage others towards healthy lifestyles!
